KAHULUI'S ANNUAL MICHAEL H. LYONS II MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT A HUGE SUCCESS!

Submitted by Leslie Mullens

Over 100 golfers and volunteers joined the Rotary Club of Kahului at The Dunes at Maui Lani for their second annual Bank of Hawaii Michael H. Lyons II Memorial Golf Tournament in December.  “We were overwhelmed with the business community’s response and just amazed at the amount of money we raised,” said tournament administrator Leslie Mullens.

Raising more than $15,000, golfers played for a chance to win a Toyota Camry and golf packages for four at the best courses Maui county offers, including lunch and four rounds at Kapalua’s Plantation Course and a day trip to Lanai to play the Four Season’s Experience at Koele and Challenge at Manele.

This year’s Rotary Cup winners were Chuck Bergson of the Rotary Club of Lahaina and partner Glenn Yamasaki from Bank of Hawaii.  The trophy will reside with Bergson’s club, complete with the bragging rights that go with it, until the next tournament.

Closing out the day, golfers were treated to a “19th Hole” cocktail party courtesy of Goodfellow Bros. and dinner catered by Café o Lei.  Other major tournament sponsors included Kaheawa Wind Power, Wal Mart, the A&B Foundation, Maui Toyota, and Mette Lyons and the Lyons Family.

Mike Lyons, the tournament’s namesake, was a devoted Rotarian and community leader.  He had served as the Kahului club’s president and as district governor, among his many contributions to the organization.  Mike died in 2004.  As a celebration of his life and a continuation of his impact, the club and his family instituted an endowment fund in his name to provide scholarships to college bound Maui youth.

The $15,000 profit will fund college scholarships for exceptional Maui youth as well as local community service projects in the coming year.  The team is already looking towards next year’s event and have created a Golf Tournament Planning Guide to be shared with other clubs in the district.  “It’s a fun fundraiser for the entire club to be involved in,” said Mullens.  “We’re so grateful to everyone who helped. We want to share our success with others.”  For more information and a copy of the guide, email lmullens@yahoo.com.
