The Chapman Stick

by Michael Kollwitz

063008Speaker1.jpgThe Chapman Stick® is easily the most radical innovation in stringed instruments since the invention of the electric guitar. The Stick is played with both hands; simultaneously playing BOTH bass and melody parts independently- by tapping and holding strings to frets (rather than by pluck or strum) The essence of guitar, bass, keyboards and drums- all into one instrument!  For a talented player, these capabilities allow The Stick to sound like 2 or 3 musicians at once.

Michael Kollwitz has been playing The Chapman Stick® * since 1976 and was one of inventor Emmett Chapman’s first music students.  He studied with Chapman for 10 years and is considered one of the world’s top Chapman ‘Stickists’.

 063008Speaker2.jpg

Michael began playing the revolutionary stringed instrument after witnessing a live performance given by Chapman in Southern California. After years of practice and study, in the early 80’s he began his own performance career. Since that time, he has performed extensively throughout the Southwestern US and has given well over a thousand performances at virtually every type of venue.

He has been an opening act for The Beach Boys, offered full-time work at Disneyland and has an extensive client list that includes everything from Fortune 500 companies to civic organizations. He has performed at festivals, fairs, upscale resorts, fine dining establishments, weddings and many other venues.   Visit his website at http://www.MichaelKollwitz.com.

"New Concepts in Fitness Training”

Presented by

Suzie Cooney, CPT

SuzieCooney.jpgSuzie Cooney, of Sacramento, Calif., got her start in sports watching her father race motorcycles. At the age of 13, she was ready to push limits by motocross racing, where sponsors recognized her talent.

By 1985, Suzie left the dirt for windsurfing on a nuclear power plant pond. With an exceptional natural ability, she entered her first slalom race, which got her noticed by Sheldon Sails, a custom windsurf sail manufacturer. The sponsorship gave her time to travel up and down the California coast in search of wind.

In an effort to improve her physical fitness, Suzie cross-trained with tennis, golf, mountain biking and running. Then added weightlifting to her schedule to increase her endurance.

Suzie has always had an interest in the medical field, specifically sports orthopaedics and the physical therapy field. Her career began on the front line, in and out of the operating rooms, assisting patients pre-operatively and post-operatively. This gave her a great appreciation and an opportunity to witness first-hand, the dedication and determination of these patients to rebuild their lives and functional health. It was a joy and an inspiration, since she herself struggles today with serious back injuries that have accumulated over the years.

As the eternal professional athlete, combined with the knowledge of sports medicine, it was a natural progression for Suzie to become a private, fitness specialist. Her experience in sports and fitness gives her a fresh perspective on teaching individuals at all levels, how to become physically fit and to feel good about themselves!

Her proficient understanding of the function of the human anatomy, allows her to expand her current working knowledge and increase the importance of a client’s limitations and/or injuries, keeping workouts safe and fun.

Since 2002, Suzie continues to successfully trains clients booked through her comprehensive website, www.suzietrainsmaui.com. She prides herself by guiding clients to a healthier lifestyle on Maui. Training is at the beach, in client’s homes or at her personal gym.

Suzie is certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine, IRONMAN Triathlon –Kona - Medical tent/triage, Athlete: Go With A Pro, CPR/Advanced First Aid, Start Living Healthy Hawaii-Maui Physical Activity & Coalition Member, Volunteer trainer for the County of Maui lifeguards on the N. Shore, Model for Hawaii Sports Model.

Suzie has lived on Maui since 1999 and lives on the N. Shore. She enjoys all of the water sports Maui has to offer, and is often seen at the local motocross track!

ALONG THE TEMPLAR TRAIL

Seven Million Steps for Peace

presented by

BRANDON WILSON

TemplarTrail.jpg

Author/photographer Brandon Wilson and his 68-year-old French friend recently completed an eleven-country, two-continent walk for peace to Jerusalem along a trail long associated with war.

Wilson’s inspiring new book about their odyssey, Along the Templar Trail: Seven Million Steps for Peace (Pilgrim’s Tales, January 2008) interweaves adventure, intrigue, wit and sharp social commentary into an entertaining Chaucerian tale about overcoming odds and discovering the secret to creating peace.

Their courageous journey from France to Jerusalem traced one marched a millennium ago by Crusaders and those who became the first Knights Templar. Like those men, their walk was difficult. There was always the uncertainly of how Middle Easterners would react once they discovered Wilson was an American.  However, they frequently stumbled upon “angels” whose random acts of kindness bolstered their resolve and rekindled their belief in humankind.   See a video of their journey here.

BRANDON_WILSON.jpgBrandon Wilson is a world adventurer and “perpetual pilgrim” has walked five of the world’s most important pilgrimage trails: the Camino de Santiago and Via de la Plata across Spain, the St. Olav’s Way across Norway, and he was the first American to walk the 1150-mile Via Francigena from England to Rome. His fascination began when he and his wife Cheryl became the first western couple to walk a traditional Buddhist trail from Lhasa, Tibet to Kathmandu.

Wilson is the award-winning author of Yak Butter Blues: A Tibetan Trek of Faith (2004) and Dead Men Don’t Leave Tips: Adventures X Africa (2005). His story “Life When Hell Freezes Over” appeared in They Lived to Tell the Tale: True Stories from the Legendary Explorers Club (The Lyons Press/Globe Pequot, 2007). His photos have won awards from National Geographic Traveler and Islands magazines. He is a member of the prestigious Explorers Club.

Charlotte George Smith

"The Best Revenge"

Charlotte George Smith almost died twice.  She survived polio at age ten; five years later she survived surgical malpractice.  She hasn't walked in over half a century.  But Smith became the first paraplegic woman to earn a pilot's license.  She also learned to swim after she had polio.  She learned to ride horseback long before it was considered possible for wheelchair users, and learned to drive while in college.

Smith earned two degrees in biological sciences at the University of Illinois, then was hired by NASA in Houston to specialize in aerospace biomedicine.  But NASA forced her into secretarial work, and a decade later tried to fire her in a cutback.  She blocked the attempt and filed suit, charging discrimination on the basis of gender and disability.  The judge agreed, and awarded promotion and back pay.  NASA's appeal was unsuccessful.

"I worked at NASA for 26 years," she says.  "For the middle six years I was in litigation against my employer."

She flew around the world in 30 days with her club of licensed women pilots, ending by attending an aerospace medicine conference at London's Royal College of Surgeons.

Smith invested in real estate, first buying a home, then some rental property.  The home "had it all," she says.  "Swimming pool, cabana, and sauna."

A quirk in civil service rules made her eligible for early retirement before she turned fifty.  She took the offer, sold her beautiful home, pulled up stakes, and moved herself and her two cats to Maui.

Now Smith is publishing the second edition of her memoir, Race the Sun!  She sees herself as a role model who can inspire others about what it means to live a long, successful life with or without a chronic illness or disability.
